Santorini Holiday travel guide.
Santorini (or in Greek called Thera) surely is one of the most spectacular and most beautiful of the Greek islands. It was shaped into its present form 3500 years ago, by one of the most violent volcanic eruptions in the history of mankind. The outcome was this island full of contrast and beauty.

Santorini has kilometres of black sand beaches, that alternate with precipitous crater walls rising to up to 350 meters of height, and revealing breathtaking views on the azure sea and the still active volcano.
The island is covered with fields and vineyards, yielding by far the best wine of Greece. In all the little villages on the island it feels like time is standing still.
And who has not seen pictures of Fira, the capital, with its unique position high up on the edge of the crater! Shining bright houses and churches in the foreground of a deep blue Greek sky. And the permanent view over the island and the sea. It is really difficult to take ones eye off the sights.
Locals about themselves: "We are not people, we are Santorinians". And their hospitality is amazing.
Once in your life you should see this island. You will never forget it.
There is an old saying describing the place: "There are more churches than houses, there are more donkeys than people, and there is more wine than there is water"
Santorini holiday resorts.
Kamari
Santorini's main beach resort at KAMARI. Black stones dominate the beach which is generously strewn with sunbeds and backed along its length by concrete villas and apartments. If you want a modern, charmless beach resort with all the facilities this is the place.
Perissa
Below the mountain you can easily make out the black sands of PERISSA. The pretty setting below the seaside mountains has attracted holiday developers in force. Apartments have sprung up in ramshackle fashion well back from the beach so that many holidaymakers face a long and tiring trek to the the sands which stretch to the south for around 5km.
Today the island produces tomatoes, pistachios and grapes for wine and exports pumice stone, but its main revenue-earner is tourism
The town is made up of steep, narrow cobbled streets of shops, tavernas, churches, fast-food outlets, 2 cathedrals, no cars and lots of people.
For those more interested in beaches than sunset views, head east to Kamari or Perissa on the coastal plain . Kamari's main beachside road has wall-to-wall hotels, tavernas, discothèques and tourist agencies.
PERISSA is a picturesque resort ; this area has a Byzantine church and a couple of Venetian castles to visit.
Kamari and Perissa offer the option of combining sun 'n' fun with cultural sightseeing.
Shopping : The best selection is in Fira, encompassing jewellery, cotton or wool clothing, dolls in national costume
Nightlife: nightclubs, most with dancing; open-air cinema; displays of traditional Greek dancing and plate-smashing.
A good network of frequent buses serves all parts of the island. Taxis are inexpensive and available everywhere. Boats serve various routes between villages. Car and motorbike hire are readily available.
