Mexico resort guides

Cancun
This holiday playground is a tourist's dream, with modern hotels & facilities, breathtaking beaches and plenty of things to do when you don't want to bask on the powdery white sands. With supreme nightlife, shopping and restaurant options, it's easy to see why Cancun is Mexico's most popular holiday resort.

Xcaret
An eco-park resort with so much to see and do, you'll invariably wish you could stay longer. For the adventurous, it's a dream come true with opportunities to swim with dolphins, snorkel in the (floodlit) underground river, explore the archaeological remains of a Mayan village, visit 'Jaguar Island', view the splendours of the coral reef aquarium and, believe it or not, much much more!

Playacar
A purpose-built resort featuring a selection of all-inclusive hotels, Playacar boasts the gently shelving white sands and blue Caribbean waters that line the Mayan Riviera. An ideal choice if you're looking for a restful holiday among beautiful lush surroundings.

Playa Del Carmen
Once a sleepy beachside village, Playa Del Carmen is a growing resort with a small but lively selection of restaurants and bars that has helped create this attractive resort's atmosphere - an intoxicating combination of 'traditional Mexico' and 'lively American'.

Puerto Morelos
Unlike many Mexican tourist resorts, Puerto Morelos offers complete rest and relaxation with its glorious tropical white sandy beach and a level of laid-backness among the locals that you might previously only have encountered in the Caribbean islands. The town's status of "National Marine Park" is proudly maintained and totally justifiable thanks to its clear-blue waters, multi-coloured tropical fish, schools of dolphins and the huge coral reef that lies about 500 metres from shore. On top of that, Puerto is an ideal base if you want to explore the Yucatan Peninsula. If you need a final reason, then consider Puerto Morelos' local nickname, "La Joya del Caribe", which translates as "The Jewel of the Caribbean."

Vaccinations are recommended for protection against hepatitis A, polio and typhoid.

Food: Mexican cuisine combines Indian and Spanish influences to produce an original and often spicy variety of food. There are plenty of international and national resaurants to choose from.Try the popular ubiquitous tortilla, and wash it down with the local mexican beer.

Nightlife: Nightlife is extremely lively and varied. The bars and clubs play everything from rock to disco to house. Clubs open at 10pm and get going after 11.30pm. For a more romantic time, take a paddle-steamer dinner cruise on the Cancun Queen.

Shopping: There are several large American style shopping centres with a good selection of the latests spost and designer labels to handicrafts and well stocked gift shops. For more unusual purchases visit the flea markets at the northern end of the resort. Best buys being leather, marble, pewter, textilesand Mayan art.

Days out: Take a hydrofoil across the bay to either Isla Mujeres or Cozumel both being excellent locations for scuba diving and snorkelling. Also with in two hours drive are the impressive Mayan ruins at Coba, Chichen Itza and Tulum. Or the currently developing resort if Puerto aventuras which is only 980 acres with its own golf course and dive centre.
