Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with high humidity, tempered by sea breezes on the coast. The average temperature is about 81ºF (27ºC). January is the coolest month, becoming especially cold in the highlands, and May is the hottest time of year. Monsoon season is between May and July, and December and January.
Shopping: Take the opportunity to treat yourself or your partner to a beautiful gem or jewel here as they are reasonably priced as are mined here and bring back something special. Local crafts including scarfs, wraps and handicrafts are the bargain hunters’ dream as all things are so cheap.
Nightlife: Nightlife is low key and situated around the hotels and local bars.
Negombo, situated in the West Coast of Sri Lanka, is known as the 'Fishing Village', where the catholic community reside. The city has miles of Palm-caressed beaches, colorful churches and tropical fish with plenty of sunshine throughout your holiday
Food and drink: Sri Lankan cuisine is based on a variety of curried dishes, all delicious and beautifully presented. Most dishes will contain the ever-present coconut milk and a number of fresh spices.
Sweets tend to be very sweet on the palate so do beware!
Why not wash it down with the local beer or arrack (a local brew made from coconut sap.) ** One day a month is Poya Day (full moon) and no alcohol is served on that day.
Days out:
Travel in a rubber dinghy down the Kelani River and take in some of the hidden beauty of the island. Stay overnights in a tent under the stars and travel back up the river the following day.
Or visit the elephant orphanage at Pinnaewela or watch the miners in their search for those ever precious Jewel at Ratnapura.
**Visa: A visa valid for one month is given on arrival, A full 10 year passport is required and has to be valid for at least 6 months upon returning to the UK. Also a departure tax is charged upon leaving of 500 rupees per person or £5.**
