The bustling Cuban capital has a unique and interesting history plainly visible in its architecture. Old Havana, though decaying, is exquisite, and the people prove exceptionally friendly.
Be careful with the black market though! **Only buy Cigars from the Government controlled shops otherwise your good deal will turn out to be Banana skin** Cuba holidays search
American Express credit cards and traveller cheques are not accepted. Take all necessary toiletries, cosmetics and medicines with you. A sink plug and mosquito repellent will be useful.
Eating out: Hotel food is a far better alternative than in local restaurants. You must try a Mohito Hemingway's favourite and a visit to his Hotel room is a must.
Out on the Town: Havana is full of nightlife from bands and hotel cabarets to clubs and parties. The most famous (and pricey) cabaret is the Tropicana.
Cuba holiday resorts
Havana
Havana is a city with a unique culture that seems to have absorbed a wonderful combination of both eighteenth century Spain and 1950s Americana into its own natural rhythm. The Old Town area is an official 'World Heritage Site', and the countless cafes, bars and restaurants enjoy toe-tapping salsa rhythms that pervade the air to provide an ideal backdrop for sampling either of this fascinating country's main two exports - rum and cigars!
Jibacoa
Only an hour's drive from Havana, Jibacao is an idyllic sandy bay overlooked by lush green hills. The white sands and transparent waters provide the perfect environment for those looking to escape the rigours of normal life and lie back and enjoy a truly relaxed holiday destination. Surely the perfect get-away-from-it-all resort, the coral reefs of Jibacao are excellent for snorkelling and scuba diving, while sailing, windsurfing, cycling and walking are also popular pastimes.
Varadero
Long considered to be one of the finest beaches in the world, the Blue Beach of Varadero stretches for more than ten miles, whilst the clear shallow water is simply stunning and inviting. At night there's plenty to do in Varadero, whether it's sampling the livelier bars and clubs, or enjoying some of the quieter romantic restaurants. This is a popular modern resort, and facilities include a brand new championship course.
Holguin
Christopher Columbus himself landed here in 1492, and declared it the most beautiful land he'd ever seen, and it's easy to see why. Located in the eastern part of Cuba, Holguin offers numerous sites of natural beauty including Guayabo, the largest waterfall in the country. This is a quiet area, and Holguin's tourism infrastructure has been carefully developed to complement its natural surroundings. And though there's limited nightlife and daytime activities, if you're looking for a restful holiday among stunning scenery, this is an ideal holiday choice.
Cayo Coco, Cuba
Boasting over 10km of fine sand and warm crystal-clear waters, Cayo Coco is a glorious tropical island resort located just off the Atlantic coast of Cuba. The island is famed for its snorkelling, and the coral reefs off the coast are home to an abundance of flora and fauna, where the shoals of fish are as brightly-coloured as you'll find in many
Hard-currency shops are in abundance in Havana, the best is Palacio de la Artesania. Each sells a variety of arts, and crafts. Best buys: Cuban cigars, rum, and coffee. The Plaza de la Catedral features an excellent market, worth a visit if just for its beautiful
Days out: There are many excursions to be had in Havana. A guided tour of Old Havana is a must, and there are several museums; the City Museum and the Museum of the Revolution are particularly worth a visit.
