Funchal
Funchal has no beaces, but is located in a natural rock amphitheatre that rises from the harbour and gently up the hillside slopes. Definitely the centre of Madeiran activity, Funchal has all the amenities you'd expect from a friendly and cosmopolitan resort (boutiques, markets, restaurants, cafes and bars), but with none of the tacky tourist traps you may find in Portugal's livelier holiday resorts.
Canico
A relaxing stay awaits at Canico, where the Old Town is a tree-lined main square surrounded by a cluster of sleepy atmospheric streets, while the newer part of town stands on the cliff-tops with commanding views over the sea.
Machico
Machico was the first point of landing back in 1419 and, although Funchal became the capital, Machico still holds a special place in the islanders' hearts. Its beautiful beach offers excellent swimming and sunbathing, whilst the two forts bear witness to long-forgotten battles with pirate invaders.
Nightlife: Nightlife is very low key and mainly based around the hotels and local bars, plus the island's casino for the Gambler in you.
Shopping: Locally produced woodcarvings and of course the local wines.
Day Trips: There’s the superb 15th century cathedral at Funchal and of course trips around the island to Explore. If you have time explore the canals built to cultivate the dry half of the island.
