Local interest and culture to be found on your holiday to Greece
The Greeks are proud of their tradition of filoxenia - the love of strangers - and will do all they can to make you feel welcome. Charming tavernas serve traditional Greek food at very good discount prices and the service you receive is warm and friendly, if rather laid back compared to British restaurants! But this is the beauty of the Greek lifestyle, and it wont be long before you too are relaxing in your chair, sharing a selection of delicious Greek meze, and taking your time over every meal on your holiday to Greece.
Here are some of Greece's best loved holiday resorts.
Zakynthos
Known locally as 'The Flower Of The East', Zakynthos has impressive pine and olive tree-covered mountains inland, with many secluded beaches and crystal-blue waters at its shores. The best sandy beaches are to be found to the east and south of the island, and near the resorts of Kalamaki and Laganas lie sea turtle nesting grounds that are carefully monitored to prevent any disruption to hatching in late summer.
Skiathos
The island of Skiathos lies in the Aegean Sea just 4km from the Pilion peninsula of the Greek mainland. A green and hilly island covered in pine forests and olive groves, it measures just 48 square kilometres but is blessed with more than 60 beaches along its 44 km coastline, making it a popular destination with both couples and families.
Rhodes
Rhodes lies only seven miles off the coast of Turkey. Its mountainous interior is covered with lush green pine forests and fertile valleys and provides a wonderful opportunity to explore some beautiful countryside. Of course, Rhodes is also world-renowned for its beaches; head north for a taste of the lively resorts, or south of the island for the simpler pleasures of a slower pace of life.
Kos
Over the centuries the Dorians, the Persians, the Romans and the Venetians have all set up shop on this outpost of the Dodecanese archipelago: each invasion adding to Kos's remarkable stock of architectural wealth and archaeological intrigue. But Kos is not just ancient history. It's also a modern, bustling, exuberant holiday isle, catering to the hedonistic tastes of sun-starved northern Europeans And there's lots of good beaches nearby, too.
Kefalonia
As fans of Captain Corelli's Mandolin will undoubtedly know, Kefalonia consists of peaceful bays, tiny hillside villages, sleepy harbours and, also, some wonderful beach resorts. And archaeological finds suggest that humans have lived in these simply beautiful surroundings for over 7,000 years, since Neolithic times. This is a great place to combine a beach holiday with some exploring.
Crete
Crete, the largest and most southerly Greek island, is a treasure trove of natural wonders, ancient history and striking scenic beauty. Described as the cradle of Europe, it lies between Europe, Asia and Africa. At 257km long (159 miles) the island offers holidaymakers a variety of scenery and things to do. There are lovely sandy beaches, clean seas for water sports enthusiasts, traditional villages to explore and some awe-inspiring natural wonders like fascinating grottoes and steep gorges.
Corfu
Corfu is a well-established holiday destination, with over one million tourists visiting every year. The most northerly of the Ionians, Corfu lies between 2 and 10km off mainland Greece and, whilst in the summer months are hot and almost entirely dry, in winter the rainfall experienced gives the island the highest average rainfall in Greece! But this helps create the verdant landscapes seen all over Corfu, particularly between late winter and early summer. The hills and meadows are full of olive trees
Loggerhead Turtles
Loggerheads turtles nest and lay their eggs in the soft golden sand along some parts of the Kefalonia and Zakynthos coastlines. The survival of the loggerhead turtle is becoming threatened. To help enable their survival there are a number of rules that you should adhere to. There are designated areas on the beach set aside for turtles; ensure that you do not wander here and disturb the hatchlings. If you can make a contribution in resort to the turtles survival then you will help keep alive a 90 million year old species.
Eating and Drinking
All resorts have a wide variety of places to eat, including Greek, Italian, English and international restaurants. Local specialities include 'Barbounia sta Karvouna', barbecued red mullet, 'Youvetsi', chunks of beef with pasta, red wine and tomato sauce and 'Tzatziki', a yoghurt, garlic and cucumber dip. More widely known dishes include pork kebabs and grilled lamb or chicken. Drink specialities include 'Ouzo' an aniseed based spirit and 'Metaxa' a local brandy. There are also a number of locally produced wines available.
Beaches
The stillness of the Aegean Sea and the breeze of the cooling Meltemi wind, which crosses many of the islands in the hottest summer months, make Greece an ideal destination for windsurfing and other water sports. The beach is the focal point of most resorts, and beautiful beaches, ranging from long, sandy expanses to small, rocky secluded coves, are the envy of many other Mediterranean destinations. In many areas, such as the northern resorts of Corfu and Halkidiki, the beaches have very shallow shelving waters, ideal for children.
