Spain Costa Blanca strike action.
Spain travel has shot itself in the foot again, not only are they increasing 2010 holidays, but now they are threatening strike action in the Costa Blanca region.
The Costa Blanca resorts include Benidorm, Alicante, Torrevieja, Denia and Javea, could be affected in an area which attracts about one million UK holidaymakers every year.
British holidaymakers heading for the Costa Blanca could find their holidays ruined by strike action.
More than 50,000 hotel workers are threatening to walk out next month in a pay dispute which could force many hotels to close.
Spain is struggling to maintain its position as Britain’s most popular destination as the credit crunch and strong euro have prompted holidaymakers to either skip a holiday or go to non-eurozone destinations such as Turkey and Egypt.
The strike was announced by the unions which represent chambermaids, cleaners, receptionists and other hotel workers.
They claim chambermaids’ wages in the region are the lowest in Spain.
UGT union spokesman Mateo Torres confirmed that without new pay talks an August strike would ensue, according to reports at the weekend.
