Liberals looking at travel crackdown
Trying to chase the travel vote. The Liberal Democrats have pledged to crack down on no-frills airlines to include the hidden extras in their pricing.
Speaking in Cardiff, Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said the policy was part of a manifesto “for travel consumers” aiming to help people who were “stitched up” by big business. I think he is trying to improve your consumer travel and holiday rights.
But Clegg also said he would attempt to stop no-frills carriers from including “hidden fees”.
However Mr Clegg should note that: “The Office of Fair Trading OFT has already completed extensive work with airlines to ensure the booking process is clean and transparent for what the Lib Dems’ are calling “unreasonable fees”. Who will determine what is unreasonable and who will pay for this quango?”
“Most of the fees Ryanair and other low cast carriers charge are optional and none are hidden. In the past I’ve been critical of low cost airlines, however we must remember they have actually driven down the cost of flights over the last ten years making travel more accessible for millions of people.”
