Holiday advice ATOL protection
Consumer holiday advice: Whenever you buy a standalone charter flight, a city break or a holiday with us you get ATOL protection automatically added to your booking.
Atol protection means just that, your holiday is protected. If you are abroad and your tour operator fails you will finish your holiday and then fly home, plus if you have not yet traveled you will get a full refund.
An Air Travel Organisers Licence (ATOL), protects you from losing your money or being stranded abroad. Travel firms selling air holiday packages must have an ATOL.
For example – Travel Republic does not have an Atol licence and therefore its buyer beware..
Before an ATOL is issued the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) checks firms, thereby reducing the risk of failure. It also requires firms to pay into the CAA’s financial guarantee scheme.
This provides money to protect customers. If your tour operator were to fail, the CAA will make a refund to you, or, if you’re abroad, it will arrange for you to finish your holiday and fly home.
If an airline you’re due to travel with fails, the ATOL-protected tour operator must make alternative flight arrangements for you, whether you’re already on holiday or due to go.
ATOL does not protect you if you book direct with an airline or book just accommodation.
How to check you’re covered
Check brochures and websites for the ATOL logo and licence number.
Ask your travel agent whether your complete holiday is ATOL protected and for the ATOL number.
Check names of travel firms and ATOL numbers at the CAA’s website (www.atol.org.uk).
How to protect an independent holiday (where holiday components have been booked from different suppliers)
Although many holidaymakers book their own independent breaks each year, by putting together their holiday components themselves, such as flights and accommodation, most don’t realise that they are at risk financially if one of these components were to fail.
Paying by credit or Visa debit card
If you pay for a component by credit card and it costs more than £100 you will have some cover, but this will only apply to the service you’ve lost, not other services you have booked separately (for example covering your flights if your airline goes bust, not your accommodation). Paying by Visa debit card may provide similar cover.
