Travel news article by guest columnist Nick:
The little Canary Island of Lanzarote is warming up for the biggest sporting event of the year.
As superfit triathletes from around the globe arrive for the annual Iron Man contest – widely regarded as the most gruelling competition if it’s kind in the world.
All of the action takes place from 7am on Saturday May 23rd – with over 1300 endurance experts taking part in a punishing circuit comprising a 3.8km swim, followed by a 180km cycle ride, topped off with a 42.2km marathon.
Which will take the front runners at least 8 hours and 45 minutes to complete.
Around 10% of entrants will be forced to drop out without ever seeing the finishing line as exhaustion takes its toll.
The Lanzarote Iron Man contest carries a top prize of $50,000 and sixty slots for the fastest competitors at the annual Grand Final, held later this year in Hawaii.
Race favourites this year include last years champion Bert Jammaer and the two time winner, Estonian athlete Ain Alar Juhanson.
The event is being filmed by Eurosport for transmission in early June and spectators can enjoy the best of the action in Puerto del Carmen, the main resort on the island. Which hosts both the swimming and marathon stages.
