Jamaica Advice: Be aware that unless the FCO issues a do not travel warning, you cannot cancel your holiday free of charge if you decide not to travel, but do bear in mind that the holiday resorts are a good 4 hours and around 120 miles from the troubles around Kingston.
Jamaican police say at least 73 people have been killed in four days of fighting as police hunt for an alleged drug lord in Kingston.
The Foreign Office Jamaica advice is for Britons to avoid all non-essential travel in and around Kingston.
“There remains an increased risk of civil disorder and street violence in other urban areas in Jamaica. UK citizens should exercise extra care if travelling away from their homes or hotels,” said the FCO
The Jamaica tourist board said the main resorts for holidaymakers, such as Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Port Antonio and Negril, were several hours from Kingston and had been operating as normal.
Director of tourism John Lynch said: “Jamaican Tourist areas remain safe and normal daily activities continue in the resort areas and cruise port
facilities. The government is working towards a quick resolution of this situation.”
The Foreign Office warned UK holidaymakers in Jamaica to take “extra caution” when travelling away from their hotels because of the violence which has seen a state of emergency declared in the Kingston area.
